SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T Programme Equaliser

The SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T is a distinguished programme equaliser renowned for its patented Vitalizer circuitry, which breathes life into audio productions, whether in live settings or studio environments. This device enhances sound by adding detail, transparency, and a heightened perceived loudness, and, when desired, delivers a profound bass foundation.

In its third generation, the SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T transitions from the classic golden exterior to a sleek black design, aligning with the SPL Studio Series aesthetic. This evolution is more than cosmetic; an increased internal audio voltage of ±18 V propels this classic to new sonic heights, offering an even more refined and detailed auditory experience.

Central to the SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T are five intuitive controls that shape its core functionality:

  • Drive: This adjusts the input level into the filter network, ranging from -20 dB to +6 dB, with a central position at 0 dB reflecting the original input level.
  • OVL (Overload Indicator): An LED that signals potential overloads in both input stages and internal processes, illuminating 3 dB prior to clipping to ensure optimal sound delivery.
  • Bass Sound: This control tailors the bass character. Shifting left introduces a ‘Soft’ and warm bass, while moving right produces a ‘Tight’, percussive bass.
  • Bass Comp: A user-friendly compressor dedicated to the bass path, preserving the original bass while enhancing compressed elements. It operates with preset attack, release, and threshold settings, employing a soft knee characteristic for subtle compression, ensuring high frequencies remain vibrant even under significant compression.
  • Mid-Hi Tune: This sets the onset frequency for a broad-band shelving filter, processing frequencies from 1.1 kHz to 22 kHz. Incorporating a Sovtek 12AX7 double triode tube within this filter imparts mid frequencies with precise transparency and a smooth, silky tonal quality.

The Process control balances the Bass Sound and Mid-Hi Tune relative to the original signal, modulating the attenuation of dominant mid frequencies. The integrated LC-EQ, built around a passive coil-capacitor network, enhances midrange presence and clarity, particularly improving speech intelligibility. This design ensures minimal noise in high frequencies, with adjustable control between approximately 2 kHz and 20 kHz.

For spatial enhancement, the Stereo Expander broadens the stereo image, utilising inter-channel phase principles to widen the perceived soundstage. This feature also employs a Sovtek 12AX7 double triode tube, blending right and left channels to add harmonic richness, resulting in a more expansive low end, clearer reverb definition, and a gentle softening of high frequencies—particularly beneficial for digitally recorded material.

The device’s On switch activates the SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T, illuminating when operational. A blinking light indicates ‘warm-up’ mode, during which the tubes reach their optimal operating temperature.

A standout feature of the Vitalizer technology is its ability to ‘de-mask’ overlapping sound components. By introducing minimal temporal shifts in louder frequencies, quieter, previously masked elements become audible, enhancing overall detail and transparency. This approach aligns the frequency spectrum with equal loudness contours, notably improving perceived loudness.

Connectivity is facilitated through Neutrik XLR connectors with gold-plated contacts and Neutrik TRS jacks, all electronically balanced with a nominal level of +6 dBu. The parallel configuration of XLR and TRS jacks allows the processed signal to be routed to multiple destinations, and dual input signals can be mixed as needed.

Aesthetically, the SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T features a robust 4 mm black anodised aluminium front panel complemented by precision-milled aluminium knobs. The steel chassis is elegantly powder-coated in black, ensuring both durability and a professional appearance.

The SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T stands as a versatile and indispensable tool for audio professionals seeking to elevate their sound quality. Its combination of innovative circuitry, user-friendly controls, and superior build quality makes it a valuable asset in any audio production setting.
