SPL MixDream XP Mk2 Summing Mixer

The SPL MixDream XP Mk2 is a high-quality 16-in-2 analogue summing mixer designed to enhance audio productions with its Class A circuitry. This device offers impressive sound quality, bringing individual tracks together in a cohesive and musical manner. The spatial depth of the stereo field and the harmonic coherence of the summed signals make mixing through the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 a unique and enriching experience.

Building upon its predecessor, the Mk2 version maintains the exceptional audio performance attributed to its internal operating voltage of ±30 V. It introduces a sleek new design and an improved tactile interface. A notable addition is the individually switchable -18 dB level attenuation for the last four stereo channels, allowing for optimal analogue summing in every mix.

The SPL MixDream XP Mk2 facilitates analogue summing by receiving individual tracks from a digital audio workstation (DAW) via D/A converters. These tracks are summed within the device and then returned as a stereo signal through an A/D converter back into the DAW. This process seamlessly combines the precision of digital production with the warmth and depth characteristic of high-end analogue consoles. The streamlined design, devoid of pan controls and faders, ensures that all DAW automation and functionalities remain fully operational without necessitating changes to existing workflows.

For precise centre positioning of mono signals such as kick drums, snares, lead vocals, and bass, the first four channel pairs (1/2 to 7/8) can be switched from stereo to mono using dedicated controls. This feature ensures accurate placement of essential elements within the mix. Additionally, the last four stereo channel pairs (9/10 to 15/16) offer an -18 dB attenuation option. This function is particularly beneficial for low-level signals, enabling them to be processed with higher digital resolution, thereby preserving intricate details and sonic characteristics. This capability is especially advantageous when working with digital reverbs and similar effects.

The output section includes a control knob that adjusts the overall output level within a range of -10 dB to +5 dB, facilitating precise matching with subsequent A/D converters. Both the main and monitor outputs are configured in parallel, ensuring that adjustments affect both simultaneously. A Variable Output switch allows users to engage or disengage this control; when deactivated, the device operates at unity gain, maintaining the input level without alteration.

Connectivity is robust, featuring 16 balanced inputs via DB25 connectors adhering to the Tascam standard, accommodating seamless integration with various D/A converters and outboard equipment. The main output delivers the summed stereo mix, which can be routed back into the DAW for recording. An additional monitor output, equipped with electronically balanced XLR connectors, provides the stereo mix to monitoring controllers or studio speakers. It’s important to note that using an unbalanced connection on either the main or monitor output will render both outputs unbalanced due to their parallel configuration.

For projects requiring more than 16 channels, the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 offers an expansion input, allowing multiple units to be linked seamlessly. This flexibility ensures that even the most complex mixes can benefit from the device’s superior analogue summing capabilities.

Aesthetically, the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 boasts a 4 mm thick black anodised aluminium front panel complemented by precision-milled aluminium knobs, exuding both elegance and durability. The steel chassis is powder-coated in black, ensuring resilience and a professional appearance. In summary, the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 stands as a purist’s choice for analogue summing, offering unparalleled sound quality, thoughtful features, and seamless integration into modern studio environments.
