Manley Enhanced Stereo Pultec EQP-1A Equaliser

The Manley Enhanced Stereo Pultec EQP-1A is Manley’s modern take on the legendary Pultec Equalizer, originally produced by Pulse Techniques, Inc. Since 1990, after securing Eugene Shenk’s permission, Manley has been crafting their version of this classic design.

These units feature Manley’s own all-tube make-up gain block to reamplify the signal post-passive EQ circuit and can be set to ‘flat’ or bypassed entirely. The continuously variable conductive plastic potentiometers ensure silent operation and durability.

The compact single-rack design takes up only a third of the space of vintage 3U Pultecs and includes additional frequency options for greater flexibility. The rear input switch allows phase inversion (0 or 180 degrees) for balanced XLR input or selection of a transformerless unbalanced 1/4″ input.

When asked if these EQs sound like the originals, Manley’s response is, “Yes! But better!” Unlike vintage models with three transformers in the signal path, the Manley version offers a transformerless option and boasts an advanced B+ power supply with regulated and balanced heater supply.

Their line amp is renowned for its exceptional sound quality, using components unavailable in the 1960s. For those seeking the old-school quirks of vintage models—noisy carbon pots, open-frame wafer switches, and exposed tubes—you’d need to seek out an original.

The Manley Enhanced Stereo Pultec EQP-1A features 1 x 12AX7WA and 1 x 6414 (or 5965) in its all-tube line amplifier. While the gain is factory set at unity, further adjustment is possible via a rear feedback trimpot.

Like the Manley 40dB Mic Preamps, these units offer both transformer-coupled balanced and direct capacitor-coupled unbalanced outputs for versatile connections and sound profiles.

Ideal for kick drums and other applications, the Pultec’s distinct Low Frequency BOOST and CUT controls add depth and power, while the bell-shaped boost with adjustable bandwidth enhances midrange clarity.
